Natural stone is the perfect material to use in all areas of your home. It is easy to maintain, has a natural beauty and is durable enough to last a lifetime. In order to make an informed decision for your particular project, it is important that you know the different types of stones, finishes and applications .
There are 4 main types for countertop installations to chose from with a varying price range.
* GRANITE -- Typically comes in a high polish finish although they do come with a honed (unpolished) or flamed (rough) finish. They can come in tiles or in slab form. There is a wide range of colors that come from every continent in the world. Granite, due to the many colors that it contains, has a "flow" that is unique to every slab or tile.
* MARBLE -- Has the same finishes as granite. Is well know for both it's use inside and outside. Marble also come in tiles or in slab form. The color range is varied. It is important, due to the possibility of staining, that it be maintained on a regular basis.
* LIMESTONE -- Softer than granite and most marbles. Many finishes to chose from. Limestone is also available in tiles or in slab form. The colors are somewhat softer and not as "busy" as granite. It is important to keep this maintained as it can scratch, etch and stain. It is important to keep this in mind when considering limestone.
* SOAPSTONE -- Mainly comes in honed (unpolished) finish. They can be used as tiles or in slab form. Not as many colors to chose from. Very durable for countertops, hearths and fireplace surrounds.
Natural stones are porous and can easily absorb liquids and moisture. To prevent stains from being absorbed, a sealer needs to be applied. This will allow some time in order to take care of the spillage. All spills should be wiped up as soon as possible. It is important to note that stones can also be etched quite quickly. Some of the culprits for etching include coffee, tea, fruit juices and other types of acidic products. These should be cleansed off immediately with mild soap and warm water. Many people consider the "wear" of stone as attractive.
Cleaning with warm water and a non-abrasive cleanser should be done on a weekly basis in order to prevent staining or build-up of dirt and grime. Also, you can apply a polish to enhance the shine of the stone. For deep set build-up there are other products available, depending on the particular problem.
